mplayer r27458 released
Dhewg has released a version of MPlayer for the Nintendo Wii that uses the new libdi will allow you to play DVD movies on your Nintendo Wii.

Once you’ve done that, you can enjoy the splendor of mplayer. That what started out as a simple proof of concept has rapidly turned into a full-featured media player, under the nourishing hands of dhewg. The main aim of the mplayer project was to get DVDVideo going, but it also supports reading video files off the SD card. (Experimental).

This is awesome. Great work!
I have one question though. In the menu, what is meant by the selections "play DVD" and "Play Title (1-5)" What is the difference between the two?
I tried this with Beverly Hills Cop, and it worked.
However I also tried it with my Casino Royale DVD and it doesn't seem to work. The disc just stops spinning after about 5 seconds and either the screen freezes up or mplayer exits to the HBC. Can anyone explain what is happening?

Its still a PoC and has alot of bugs.
the play title options are if you want to play a perticular title on the dvd...
for casino royale try playing it from a title and see if that works?
Yea great app but still buggy as its a PoC cant wait for the final stable version

Heh, I like how PoC can be construed as Piece Of Crap! By the way, it far from deserves such a description, Pearl Harbour played very nicely with only a little jerkiness throughout, especially in action scenes.
Even though Rush Hour 2 and 28 Weeks Later didn't work at all, it's still a massive development, I'm just so excited about how good this can get with hopefully fully working DVD playback in the near future. Absolutely brilliant.

For a first release this is working great in my opinion. The first movie i put in was a burnt dvd without a menu called "Johnny Sunshine" and it worked almost perfect. The second dvd i tried was a video collection from Sigur Ros and it froze after the "universal" logo when it tried to load the menu i assume. But when i chose the titles 1 through 5 i could watch the videos pretty much perfectly, but froze when trying to load the next video.
What i am wondering is, will mplayer eventually be able to boot any media off of dvds? Like mp3's, divx/xvid files?

I can't believe it... It works better and has better quality than my actual DVD player does (on my 42" plasma TV). My DVD player doesn't have widescreen support, and so the picture is blurry as hell.

Next relase will probably able to read DVD-Data. For now, you can read avi, mp4, 3gp and wmv video files from SD card, standard DivX format included.

MPlayer not working on D2CKEY modded WII
I have PatchMII installed and I have also tried installing both the modchip and
the non-modchip versions of the DVD LIBRARY. One thing I don't understand is
it says "For those modchips that aren't DVD compatible, use PatchMII." - Well...
Aren't ALL modchips DVD compatible? I don't get it. They all have to be able to
read DVDs to play the backups! Mine has always worked fine. The Gamecube
Media Player works fine for me also and reads everything with no problem so I
know my WII and chip can read DVDs. Nevertheless...
Once MPlayer is loaded and running, I get a screen with rainbow graphics on
the right and a box with MPlayer in it and a scroll under it on the left.
Messing with the joypad on the WII-Mote or the Gamecube Controller results in
resetting the scroll and making the screen go grey for about a second or so
sometimes. Other than that, I get no response at all. The HOME button and/or
the Z button do nothing, the only way to exit is to shut the WII off or press the
RESET button on the WII. I have thrown multiple DVDs into the WII, it seems
like the program isn't even attempting to spin the disc and read it.
I have a D2CKEY modded WII. I know this is one of the first modchips for the
WII, maybe the people who made MPlayer don't have a beta tester for this
chip. Well... I volunteer!!! If you want me to help just ask please!
It will be great once I can finally play stuff from DVD on the WII!!! 8)
Thanks!!!

Some modchips screwed up the commands for DVD-Video so that is what they mean by DVD compatibility. Basically, if you have a modchip and you don't know, go the PatchMii route. Also, did you try reading the README? It mentions that the button to bring up the menu is 1 on the wiimote; you might want to give that a try.

caddr: OF COURSE I READ THE README!
And of course I have tried every single button
on both the WII-MOTE and on the GAMECUBE
CONTROLLER. Nothing works. It's frozen.
If it wasn't frozen then it should at least exit
when I hit the HOME or Z key but it does not
even do that. It is completely fucked on my system,
that's my point I think it doesn't like my D2CKEY.
vettacossx: All that channel does when I run it is say:
Playing loop.mov
File not found: 'loop.mov'
Failed to open loop.mov.
And it keeps scrolling and saying this and filling the screen with it...

have you tried the original, none-channel version yet? sounds like a messed up channel to me. who are these guys anyway making channels out of WIPs and POCs and 0.000001 alpha versions? :-D

Read my post of course I would never just
try what some person uploaded as a channel
and come here and complain. The comment
about the channel not working was an after
thought directed to the guy who posted about
the channel. My complaint is still directed
towards the official release - it does not work
whatsoever on my system PERIOD.
The authors need to fix it for D2CKEY.

Finally got it working!!!
GEEZE FUCKING HELL!!! I just got the fucking thing to work!
My fucking God they need to document this shit better!
I can't believe after all the posts on here of me saying
exactly how it was behaving no one realized what was wrong!
I read on a post on the hackmii.com site where someone posted
that the paths are hard coded and you can not rename the
MPLAYER directory! I went and renamed my Media Player directory
back to MPLAYER and lo and behold, it is now working!!!
So to anyone who is having a problem with this fucker working -
Make sure the directory is named MPLAYER!!!
As for how it looks and plays it doesn't seem to look/sound any
better than the old Gamecube dvd player and it also does not
seem to play anything but DVDs so for now the Gamecube media
player is still the best bet.

first of all the channel works perfect BUT REQUIRES THE ORIGINAL FILES FROM TEH ARCHIVE TO BE ON THE SD CARD
this is just for easy access nothing more...nothing less...Install it with Wadmanager AFTER you have tried and got it to work in the HBC...(if you cant manage that then your shit out of luck BTW GBATEMP MADE THE WAD ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GOOGLE!
who is "this guy" google that to! thanx
(personally i use IMGburn to make my DVD-r backups burned to Maxell dvd-r and they play PERFECTLY with this but its very picky and not real compatable with "just any dvd"
its far from "perfect dvd playback" but its a TOTAL BENCHMARK for the wii! I am very thankful for this release!

the channel is a fine thing, i have it installed since the release, but you cant quit! the system crashes with code, cause the elf version has a different drop out routine than a channel has to have. "these guys" often dont know (or just dont do it) how to chance the code in the way that the channel dropout works. so please do it right or just dont. (AND THAT IS JUST IN MY HUMBLE OPIONION, no offence at all, my english is not nearly perfect as you can surley see!)
I would have prefered not to see this channel, but a channel with dropout function in some time. i like sitting and not pulling the pluge or pressing the PB. so I use the elf, its not as nice and it takes longer but it doesnt crashes my wii each time. besides, "these guys anyway" was meant more in a funny than in a complaining way. and I have the links to their pages, so no need to google ;-)
good media is very important, I use Verbatim and 2x burn speed, works best for my pal, second are fujitsu 4 me. always -r! heard they are better to the wii op drive, but +r worked also quite good.
