SDL MAME Wii
ANYBODY WHO GOT A CORRUPTED SD CARD WHILE USING THE EMULATOR:
Please try using version 0.3.1 and tell me if you still get the corruptions.
Since this is now a seperate port from the Wii Linux one, I think it's only natural it has its own thread.
Quote:
This is a port of MAME for the Wii. Unlike the previous SDL MAME for the Wii,
this is not based on Wii Linux. Please note that although many games work well
with the emulator, others may not work at all. See below for details.
DEFAULT CONTROLS:
Emulator Menu: WiiMote Home Button / GameCube L-Trigger
Insert Coin: WiiMote Minus Button / GameCube R-Trigger
Start (not all games use this): WiiMote Plus Button / GameCube Start Button
Up/Down/Left/Right - WiiMote D-Pad / Nunchuck Joystick / GameCube D-Pad
Button 1/2/3/4 - WiiMote 1/2/B/A / GameCube B/A/X/Y
Back (Exits current game) - WiiMote Plus + Minus Buttons / GameCube Z Button
Controlls can always be changed from in the emulator options.
ISSUES:
* Lots of ROMs are supported, but not all of them. If you don't see the ROM in
the list in the emulator, then support for that ROM isn't included. This is
to keep the size of the emulator low enough to run effectively on the Wii. A
list of all the ones that are can be found here:
http://www.toadking.com/wiimame-0.3.1.txt
* Just because a ROM is supported does not mean it will run. Even games for
early boards like CPS-1 can fail to run due to RAM limitations. If the
emulator suddenly kicks you out to the Homebrew Channel, look in the MAME
mame folder (sd:/mame/) for a file called errors.txt. If it says something
about failing to allocate space, then odds are the ROM can't run on the Wii.
The emulator might also crash outright and leave you with a code dump if RAM
runs out.
* Only software rendering is supported. This makes playing games without using
the frameskipper slow, but the auto-frameskipper feature is enabled by
default. Might add GX support later to try to make it less choppy.
* Stereo audio is disabled. (Due to floating point issues; will be looked into
later.)
* The joystick on GameCube controllers can't be used. (Will be looked into
later.)
* The default UI font is way too small. I've included a custom font I found on
MAMEWorld, Helvetica LT. (http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_supp.html)
CHANGELOG:
0.3.1
* Upgraded libfat to 1.0.6, hopefully this fixes the SD card corruption bug
* Added USB support (Start SDL MAME Wii from a USB drive to enable it)
* Fixed "Unexpected option gl_lib queried" error log
* Fixed Nunchuck control mapping
* Switched Buttons 1 and 2 around (by public demand)
* Fixed support for some games (including Donkey Kong and Frogger)
* Moved errors.txt and ui.bdf files into /mame/
0.3
* First official release

I'll be testing this as soon as my misses finishes watching crap on the tv! lol
Thnaks very much for this in advance!
edit:
Just tried Eswat and Moonwalker and they both boot super fast and run great (slight slow down with loadsa sprites on screen on moonwalker though).
Is there a way on the rom selection to scroll for all the games on my sd as all I can see is about 15 games?
Very nice work though... from the begining this (well this and UAE) is the only emulator I ever really wanted working in the wii scene! lol ...and now its finaly landed!

I know this is still pretty early on, but do you think that Neo-Geo emulation will ever be possible? It'd be great to be able to play Aero Fighters and Metal Slug! Keep up the great work!

After a quick try I've got working for me... Dynamite Dux, Shadow Dancer, Osman (which is a wicked game that I could never get to work on xbox mame!), aliens, xmen, tmnt, simpsons, parodius, sunset riders, eswat, green beret, robocop 2, dragon ninja, crudebuster, super bubble bobble, return of the jedi, super contra, pac mania and the real ghostbusters...
Although as stated no Capcom games seem to be working (except the non CPS 1941, 1942 and Commando) - plus a fair few others not working for me like rolling thunder, shinobi, robocop, pacland etc but i'll try and update my romsets first to see if its that and not the emu?

Ok, tried running some roms and I keep getting a "no roms found" message. I've tried editing the mame.ini file but that isn't helping. Has anyone else been able to set this up? Or does it just not work for SDHC cards.

Hey Toad King--
This is just awesome! Praise for taking this project on and congratulations on the early success with it. I've just been playing Aliens on your pre-release (v.2) so I can't wait to replace it with this one. Thanks again!

Wow. I just played Popeye on my TV. Great, great, great work. Just curious, what driver would you have to add for Matmania?

Been waiting for something like this! Great work!
It seems to run pretty much like the other Linux based
M.A.M.E. but possibly a bit slower...
For some reason, frameskip defaults to AUTO which
does not give a proper measurement of speed.
SO... When you first come up into the menu go to options
and choose USER INTERFACE and set FRAMESKIP DEC and
INC to like A & B for temporary use. Then load up a game
and use A & B to change frameskip to 0. This is how it
should be set. When the framerate is 1:1 like this, many
of the games are VERY slow. (RASTAN for example.)
When it first came up I noticed jerky scrolling and knew
right away it was FRAMESKIP set on AUTO doing it.
After I fixed it to not skip frames I was suprised that it
seems to run slower than the Linux port.
Maybe I'm wrong... Maybe RASTAN ran slow on the other
port also but I seem to remember it running realspeed.
Skipping frames is just no good, it makes scrolling look
crappy and the control isn't precise. Hopefully the emulator
can receive some speed in the future.
Also - I have heard that regardless of if you comment out
certain games or not when compiling M.A.M.E., it still has
nothing to do with the speed. It would be nice then to
just have all games included in the compile.
Especially since many of the included games don't run
realspeed anyhow. Not trying to complain BTW - I am
very happy with this release and hope more work is
done soon! Just trying to mention some of the flaws I've
found so far. 8) I've actually been trying to get FASTMAME
for DOS working under DOSBOX but it keeps crashing...
I don't know if it doesn't like cwsdpmi or what but I was
hoping I could get it working since this seems to be one
of the most optimized versions of M.A.M.E. out there.
Oh well, if it's fast cuz it hits x86 hardware then that's
obviously why it's crashing on the PPC WII.
GOOD LUCK!!!

This seems to be a limitation with MAME's built-in GUI. I'll see if I can make it scroll like the controller option windows.

I'm thinking this problem and the problem with no USB support might be related. Can anybody else with a SDHC card confirm this?
In the meantime, try to find a regular SD card to use and see if that works.

There's a specific Mat Mania driver in MAME, but it wasn't built with this release. A build with it (and other similar games) added is only about 300kb larger, so I might include it in a later release.

Just ran into a strange bug.
I had played a little of Strider and then tried Golden Axe.
The Wii froze up and I had to hold down the power button to reset it.
When I returned to the Homebrew channel, the Mame icon was corrupt and mame said "no roms found".
When I checked the SD card, all of my roms had been deleted.
Error log read: Unexpected option gl_lib queried

Just loaded up the new version, after already having tested the much improved one from the other thread, I can confirm my SanDisk SDHC 8gig card as well as a cheap Presidents Choice SDHC 8gig card (lol) are working properly with this version as they had with the smaller update from the other day.. tried some CPS1 games, workin just fine, hopefully you can get that scrolling in the rom list fixed like you mentioned, anyways thank you very much

This is one of the most amazing pieces of homebrew I have seen on the Wii. At first I was freaking out because I was getting a message "could not find roms" or something like that. It turns out it was actually because of my version of the Homebrew Channel was really old. I just updated to the latest HBC, and am now playing Osman on my Wii. I am in bliss, thank you!

That sounds very serious. Can you recreate this? (Back up everything on your SD card before trying again, just in case.)

I've gotten it to freeze and crash several additional times, not always with the same rom, but usually after loading 3 - 4 games and playing them a little before switching.
It will eventually lock up when I choose a game to load.
I've only experienced files getting corrupted/deleted twice.
The first time, it deleted all of my roms and corrupted the icon for mame.
The second time, it corrupted half of the icons on my sd card, but the roms survived.
I'm trying to recreate it a few more times to see if there is some kind of pattern that causes it.
I should also add that the rom that causes the freeze/crash has been random, and a rom that works flawlessly on other attempts before or after. (ie: its not a bad rom causing the issue).

I have the same problem. I'm using a regular SD Card (Kingston 2GB).
It seems the emulator is looking for the " root" instead " mame" folder.
If you put the roms in " sd:\roms" they must work but that's not OK.
Also you must put CFG folder in the " root". Otherwise, the control won't work ...
See ya!

That would be great as trying to test all the games on my card is almost impossible at the mo.

Yeah that games quality! ...unofficial strider mk2!
Maybe we should get a list going on here of games people have got working well (theres quite a few)? ...and ones that currenlty don't work or aren't supported (rodland, robocop, shinobi, pacland, pow, Newzeland story, r-type etc)? ...I appreciate this is still early work though.

I Tried Battletoads and couldnt get it to run. I read somewhere that it might be an old rom that new versions of mame dont support.

To reply to a few of the compatibility comments, I'm pretty sure you need the mame .134 roms for them to work right. Here are the games I've tested so far & have working:
1941
1942
Aliens
Alein Syndrome
Altered Beast
Arkanoid
Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja
Battletoads
Centipede
Dig Dug
Empire Strikes Back
Final Fight
Galaga
Gauntlet 2p & 4p version
Ghosts n Goblins
Golden Axe
Goonies
Gradius
Gradius 3
Gyruss
Haunted Castle
Mario Bros
Millipede
Mr Do
Nemesis
Paperboy
Parodius
Pole Position (controls were a little 'meh')
Pole Position II (ditto)
Punch Out
Rampage
Rastan
Return of the Jedi
RoboCop
RoboCop II
Rygar
Salamander
Shadow Dancer
Shinobi
Simpsons (both 2p and 4p version)
Super Punch Out
Spy Hunter
Star Wars
Street Fighter II - the World Warrior
Street Fighter II - Champion Edition
Street Fighter II - Turbo Hyper Fighting
Strider
Super Contra
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (both 2p & 4p version)
TMNT II - Turtles In Time (both 2p & 4p version)
vs Castlevania
vs Ice Climbers
vs Super Mario Bros
Xmen (2p and 4p versions)
So basically, if you're having trouble with any of the above, seek out an alternate rom set, because it is possible to get them running.
Other notes:
Street Fighter 1 always code dumps for me.
Every Donkey Kong, DK Jr, and DK 3 rom I've tried sends me back to the homebrew channel.
I can't get Double Dragon or R Type games to even show up at all.
Street Fighter Alpha seems to load and decrypt and then jumps back to the HBC. I assume it just runs out of memory.

@ aml435:
Thats great that a lot of the Capcom games work (and you've got robocop and shinobi working) - I was hoping it might have just been my romset!

Dynamite Dux

Golden Axe
Goonies
Gradius
Gradius 3
Green Beret
Gyruss
Haunted Castle
Mario Bros
Michael jacksons Moonwalker
Millipede
Mr Do
Nemesis
Osman
Pac mania
Paperboy
Parodius
Pole Position (controls were a little 'meh')
Pole Position II (ditto)
Punch Out
Rampage
Rastan
Return of the Jedi
RoboCop
RoboCop II
Rygar
Salamander
Shadow Dancer
Shinobi
Simpsons (both 2p and 4p version)
Super Bubble Bobble
Super Contra
Super Punch Out
Spy Hunter
Star Wars
Street Fighter II - the World Warrior
Street Fighter II - Champion Edition
Street Fighter II - Turbo Hyper Fighting
Strider
Super Contra
Sunset Riders
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (both 2p & 4p version)
The Real ghostbuster

vs Ice Climbers
