4.2 update, safe?
Hello, sorry If I'm posting something that was already posted, but I'm arriving now to the Wii world (actually, 2 days ago..hehehe), just bought a Wii, it came with the 3.2U firmware, I THINK it's unlocked (I'm trying to download some games to see if it works, but so far, I only downloaded bad isos), I did the homebrew just for fun to see if it worked (with the Bannerbomb), it worked perfectly, and then I connected it to the internet, it asked me to update the firmware, I did some research and read about some Wiis getting bricked after this update, I want to know if it's "safe", or if there's a safe method of making this update (ie: if it bricks I can always go back), or if there's anyway to know if it'll brick...Or is it just plain luck?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Zarnick, make sure your homebrew channel is updated to 1.0.6
Then update, you shouldn't get a brick. I'm on 4.2 and never got a brick. I did this while I updated, I recoreded the update in case if it bricked and you have proof.

Hum...and what about all those wii's bricked? Has nintendo made some changes on the update so that it won't brick anymore?
Also, is there any "failover"? like for instance a backup or something?
Thanks.

The people without homebrew got bricked. All those wii bricks were caused by a buggy code.
The recent update was for the wii shop.

Yes, but my update will bring it to the firmware 4.2 right? (It doesn't say on the information, only that it has a new firmware for updating)...
I don't mind having the homebrew channell off (I can reinstall it latter, or at least I've seen it works), but I don't want to bring back my wii because a nintendo update bricked it, as people have posted happened. Basically the "safe ground" I'd like to know if it's possible, is if it's possible to hard-reset the wii to the original settings if it get bricked, or something like this.
Otherwise, I think I'll just wait for the next update...maybe it won't be bugged?

People forget 4.2 either stay in 3.2 or 4.0. Why take the risk when you don't have too?

How do I update only to 4.0 then? (since it won't update the boot2, I believe it's a safe update right?)

Use "Firmware Updater 4.0" by waninkoko and you avoid the boot2v4 crap (so bootmii can be installed as boot2)
Also if want to use the shop channel either use WiiSCU or NUS downloader to update and gain access...

I'll look on the waninkoko firmware updater...think I should be able to find it in his blog, and what about 4.1, is it safe?
As a quick reply, what's bootmii? A replacement for boot2???
What are the benefits of having it?
Thanks

Yes its safe also, id say there's no real no difference from 4.0/4.1. so your pick really.

There are Many benefits of using bootmii (especially using it as boot2 instead of IOS).
Mainly, it literally saves your Wii from Semi-Full Bricks. Meaning if you mess up the system menu installing themes or mess your system IOS's you can restore your Wii the way it was with a NAND backup you've created.
It will save you a trip to NOA or 200 bucks...

Bootmii has been throrughly tested and used for quite some time now. It does't make bricks it fixes 'em.

Ok, so, it worked for the 4.0 without a flaw, but I tried first for the 4.1 and it gave me an error, what are the differences between both?
Also, is there a way to run the Shop Channel without going to 4.2?
Thanks once again

4.1 has bug fixes for wii sports resort. Since wii sports resort is a great game, you should run 4.1, and get wii sports resort.

Hum, ok, I'll try, the Error I've had was Error ret -1036, I checked on the web and this means a missing IOS, since I have the 4.0 now, from the Waninkoko, then this error should be free right?

which updater are you using? Do you have ios 61? I keep mine up to date, until 4.2, so I don't remember what I did. I'm skipping 4.2 because it has no point.

I'm using the one from waninkoko's blog, and I think I have IOS60 (I can confirm with you later when I get home)

I think you aren't supposed to use that one anymore, because it might cause stubbing or something. Try another one.

So, I tried to update to 4.1, and it worked, no problem at all.
I tried to go for bootmii, but since it was only going to be IOS (my boot1 was patched already ), and from what I've read I couldn't retrieve a NAND backup, I've skiped it.
I tried to install the WiiSCU, but the screen just went blank, a hardreset brought back my Wii, and of course, no shopping channel, I guess I won't be able to use the shopping channel so soon then right?
==EDIT==
I've finally managed to test if copy DVD's work, and they work, without using Gecko or loading trough any other program, does this means that my Wii is chipped?

If your talking about running backups through the "Disc Channel" instead of backup loaders, then its probably a soft-mod (maybe you installed Startpatch or cIOSCORP) if you bought a new untouched Wii.
So theres no reason to think its got a modchip unless you bought it used or your pals with miyamoto...

homebrew freezes up the wii randomly all the time. If you try wiiscu one or two more times it should eventually work. While you are there, install ios 60 and 61.

Hum....ok....but what if it goes wrong on the WiiSCU? Can it brick?
Also, were can I find those IOS? (and I think installing them would be just like installing any homebrew application right?)
==EDIT==
Alright! Finally made it with WiiSCU and now I have the shopping channel! I also updated to IOS61, but I can't see that this actually worked, on the HBC, when I press the home button, it still shows IOS32, how can I find if it actually worked?
Thanks.
==EDIT2==
Hahaha...fantastic...I tried to buy some stuff and...the shopping channel doesn't work on my country (invalid postal code)...all this trouble...and then they want you NOT to download games...argh
But I still don't know how to see what's my IOS...
==Edit3==
Do not ask why, but I tried to update to 4.2 and it worked like a charm (via the Nintendo update tool), however one thing strucked me, the Homebre Channell did NOT went away, it's still there, and yes, they've putted the stubbed IOS61 that doesn't allow me to run anything that uses the IOS (ie: Wad Manager 1.5), the Wii just locks.
Isn't it supposed to make the HBC go away?
