It's trendy, it's fashionable and also legally questionable, but ROM hacking has been around for years. Be it a graphical makeover or complete translation hackers have been modifying video games using various techniques from hard core ASM hacking to using various tools created for making that perfect custom game.

Well, most of us know the classic Super Mario Brothers has been modded to the extreme so what better of a time to get to work on one of Mario's latest incarnations - Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. Qubed Studios has released a full fledged 3D based level editing suite for the game named Toad's Tool 64. Using this level editor one can create a custom gaming experience. Combine this with a text based translation one can hope to see some really cool mods coming out way soon.

To actually start hacking the ROM you'll need to decompress it first, then grab Toad's Tool and lastly the text editor. No word yet on if Toad's Tool 64 supports high resolution textures.

This is really cool. I can't wait to see what some people are going to make. However, it'd be really cool to see a Goldeneye 007 editor, and see what people could do with that.

does anyone know how to obtain the HUD textures? i made a Luigi mod and wanted to change the HUD from a Mario picture to Luigi.

also made custom NES style coins and wanted to change them to NES style on the HUD as well.
also the version of Toads Tool posted on here isn't the most recent. this one is 0.2b and the most recent one is 0.5b

I use the editor and its a really easy rom editor.
you can hack a lot of things with it.
at the moment im working at new super mario 64.
for all guys that want to hack super mario 64 i just can say use toads tool and maybe the tile molester.
but make a copy of your game,if i use the tile molester and then i want to look how it looks then the game crashes
